We have worked on many complex Schematic designs that required many pages and multiple signaling standards. No design is too complex. It is no problem if your schematic needs many large parts like FPGAs, SOCs, MCUs, and Processors, or has many repeated channels like a Audio Processing or Signal Conditioning design. A hierarchical design breaks up the schematic into related sections that make visualizing the overall design easier. This is very helpful when a schematic design has a lot of large parts like processors or FPGAs that need to span multiple pages in order to be utilized efficiently. This design approach also adds a extra layer of ERC checks that ensure the design is created correctly. We currently use Altium Designer for all Hierarchical Schematic Design.
Many of our schematics entail high speed circuit design that often requires many DDR2, DDR3, or DDR4, and multiple high speed standards such as 6G SATA, 10 GbE, 8G Fiber Channel, USB 3.0, high speed SERDES, SGMII, RGMII, etc. These designs typically have large processors and FPGAs that bring in many high speed serial lanes that require careful planning and rule definitions for the downstream PCB layout. This type of schematic design also usually has very dense, high speed backplane connectors so that many high speed boards can be connected in a larger system. Attention to detail is critical in a large high speed design and can save time down the road in terms of less design spins with first pass successes.
We have also worked on many high power and high voltage circuit designs that required stringent definition of copper thickness and spacing between copper, layers, and pcb edges to insure operation at High Voltage & High Current. High power circuit design requires extra effort in parts selection to make sure that all components used can handle the voltage and current specified. Very specific PCB rules need to be defined in the schematic as well to make sure signals are set up with the proper spacing and trace thicknesses in the PCB Layout.
Audio circuit design also requires that care is taken to not introduce any un-wanted noise sources. These schematics typically have high precision audio amplifiers on the front end that work best with a symmetrical design and attention to any stray capacitances or inductance. Most audio schematic designs have multiple channels and can utilize Altium's helpful multi-channel design tools.
